Natural Ways to Battle the Common Cold

This past week I stumbled across one of my roughest experiences yet as a mom. Being sick. It was honestly horrible. I had never thought about it before, but for the first time in my life, when my head started spinning and my nose was clogged and I had a body aches and a fever, I couldn’t just crawl into bed and tell the rest of the world to go away for awhile.  Instead, there was a little human that needed me, wanted me, was dependent on me to help meet her most basic needs.

For the most part, I was extremely lucky to have other folks step up to help. Theron was great about encouraging me to get rest while he played with P. Grandma took P for a whole day while I stayed home sick from work and rested.  So I’ve been lucky. I’m not sure I would have survived without them to be quite honest. And I’ve been so grateful that my exposure to P has been limited. I missed her fiercely, but nothing would break my mama heart more than seeing her sick too.

It’s been longer than I can remember since I’ve gotten as sick as I did this past week. Before I used to head straight for the meds- Dayquil, Nyquil, Tylenol Cold… you get the idea. But over the past couple years, I’ve transitioned to a more natural approach to my health. And I have to say, despite being tempted head to the local pharmacy to buy as many cold meds as I could find, instead I found myself sticking to my guns and trying things a new way.

For other mamas like me suffering from a nasty cold but looking to approach your health more naturally, I wanted to share those ideas here. (Let me preface that these are all concoctions with MAMA in mind. Please note that some essential oils that should definitely not be used on children. Common Cold Mama Remedies…

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar Tea- It’s just as disgusting as it sounds, but let me tell ya, if you can gut it out, it really does help relieve congestion.  I mixed about two tablespoons of vinegar with 6-8 ounces of hot water and a generous amount of honey.
  2. Steam + Peppermint Essential Oil– It is common knowledge that warm, moist air helps break up congestion. But this time I tried adding some essential oils into the mix. You can either boil water, add a few drops of peppermint oil, and breathe in the steam for as long as the water stays hot, or you can add peppermint oil straight into the humidifier.  Quick aside here: my new go-to for high-quality essential oils is Eden’s Garden.   3. Yogi Breathe Deep Tea– If you’re looking for something that will both make you feel good and relaxed and help combat your congestion, this tea is your ticket. I mixed in a bit of honey and downed this tea several times a day over the past week. It helped immensely!
  4. Hot Bath + Essential Oils- Dropping 8-10 drops of either lavenderpeppermintcinnamonjuniper, or a mix of more than one is a perfect recipe to not only relieve congestion but it also helps ease those aching muscles and joints. Make sure you use water as hot as your are able to tolerate.
  5. DIY Vapor Rub- Take a small amount of coconut oil in your hand (about an ounce) and add 7-10 drops of an essential oil (best options are eucalyptus, mint, or evergreen). Spread the mixture on your chest or under your nose and watch the magic happen!

Alright mamas, hope this is helpful.Hopefully you don’t end up with a bug this fall and don’t need this arsenal of natural ideas, but just in case, there you have it!
